Two Sisters Holiday Home: Harmonizing with Nature in Salo, Finland

Yi Sun

Situated amidst picturesque pine trees overlooking the sea in Salo, Finland, the Two Sisters Holiday Home, designed by MNY Arkitekter, embodies a harmonious blend of sustainability and functionality. Completed in 2023, this holiday retreat is tailored to accommodate two siblings and their families, fostering a sense of togetherness while allowing for privacy and individuality.

Architectural Design

The villa, nestled on a rocky site, seamlessly integrates into its natural surroundings, respecting the existing pine trees and maximizing views of the landscape. Functionally divided into two units, the design employs a fan-shaped layout to merge the overnight shelter with the main living spaces. Visually, the villa appears as four smaller buildings of varying heights, creating an intriguing architectural composition.

Spatial Organization

A narrow entrance between the units offers glimpses of the surrounding landscape, enticing visitors to explore further. Inside, the main spaces feature visible roof beams and expansive windows, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments. Despite the physical separation, the design fosters a subtle connection between the units, allowing for moments of shared experience while preserving individual privacy.

Interior Design and Sustainability

The interior spaces boast a warm and inviting atmosphere, with wooden surfaces treated with lye and complemented by terracotta-colored tiles. Dark fireplaces and fixed furniture provide a striking contrast against the light wood, adding visual interest to the interiors. Sustainability is a core focus of the project, with features such as natural ventilation, air-source heat pumps, and underfloor heating enhancing energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Construction and Materials

Constructed with a prefabricated 180 mm log frame and clad with vertical spruce cladding, the villa utilizes durable and eco-friendly materials. The floor and roof are made of glue lam beams and insulated with recycled wood fiber insulation, further minimizing its ecological footprint. The careful selection of materials and construction methods ensures longevity and resilience in the face of Finland’s challenging climate.

Conclusion

The Two Sisters Holiday Home stands as a testament to thoughtful design and sustainable architecture. By seamlessly blending with its natural surroundings and prioritizing environmental responsibility, MNY Arkitekter has created a timeless retreat where family bonds can flourish amidst the beauty of the Finnish landscape.
