Churruca Residential Building, designed by BE STUDIO, graces the Old Eixample of Mataró, Spain. Situated in a compact urban area near the coastline, this architectural gem draws inspiration from Mediterranean aesthetics, harmonizing with its coastal surroundings.

Architectural Design

Led by Silvia Baulies and Gaspar Bosch, the architects envisioned a structure that seamlessly integrates with the local “casa de cos” typology. The building’s facade blends with neighboring structures, aiming for a subtle presence while evoking the essence of Mediterranean architecture.

Interior Layout and Courtyard Design

Inside, a central courtyard serves as the heart of the residence, offering a tranquil space for residents to connect with nature and foster community relationships. This void not only enhances privacy but also provides dual aspect views to the residences, maximizing natural light and ventilation.

Sustainable Features

Churruca Residential Building prioritizes energy efficiency and sustainability. Passive energy systems, including external cord blinds and a well-insulated building envelope, minimize energy consumption and ensure comfortable living spaces throughout the year. The incorporation of aerothermal energy for heating further reduces the building’s ecological footprint.

Inclusive Design

Designed with a gender perspective, the layout emphasizes inclusivity and functionality. The open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas promote social interaction, while generously sized kitchen and laundry spaces accommodate multiple users simultaneously.

Eco-Friendly Construction

To minimize environmental impact, the building features a metallic load-bearing structure, non-plastic insulation, and windows with wooden frames. These measures not only contribute to a traditional aesthetic but also align with the project’s Mediterranean soul.

Churruca Residential Building stands as a testament to sustainable design principles, seamlessly blending contemporary living with timeless Mediterranean charm.
