Yi Sun

Nestled within the 600-year-old ancient village of Langtou in the northern suburbs of Guangzhou, the ChunYangTai Arts and Cultural Centre stands as a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage. Designed by Atelier FCJZ, this cultural complex pays homage to the village’s storied past while embracing modern architectural innovations.

Responding to History

Langtou village, renowned as an “accomplished scholars village,” boasts a wealth of well-preserved ancient architectural marvels, including academies, ancestral temples, and vernacular houses. Informed by the village’s historical scale and layout, the ChunYangTai Centre disperses its program across ten small building units, connected by curvilinear brick walls reminiscent of the village’s alleys and courtyards.

Merging with Nature

Embracing the natural landscape, the centre features nearly 30 groups of planted water ponds adorning its rooftops. Lush aquatic vegetation, primarily water lilies, not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to energy efficiency. Elevated walkways connect the roof ponds, creating a seamless integration with the surrounding environment and forming a captivating “multi-level lotus pond system.”

Inheriting Local Culture

Drawing inspiration from local traditions, the centre utilizes traditional materials such as red tiles, grey bricks, and exposed concrete to pay homage to the Langtou heritage. Contemporary interpretations of Lingnan architectural elements, such as the “Dragon boat ridge” and “Moonbeam,” manifest in the iconic crescent windows, which infuse the interior spaces with soft, natural light while framing panoramic views of the surroundings.

Conclusion

The ChunYangTai Arts and Cultural Centre stands as a beacon of cultural preservation and architectural innovation in the heart of Langtou village. By seamlessly blending historical context with modern design principles, Atelier FCJZ has created a timeless space that honors the past while embracing the future. As a symbol of local identity and community pride, the centre serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Guangzhou’s ancient heritage.
