Embracing Mono-Material Design

Situated in Vallam, Sriperumbudur, the Metallic Bellows factory office by KSM Architecture embodies a commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship. Inspired by BV Doshi’s philosophy of celebrating imperfection and simplicity, the design revolves around a mono-material approach, with clay brick taking center stage.

Integrating Nature into Design

Drawing inspiration from the lush surroundings of the existing manufacturing factory, the design seamlessly integrates gardens and courtyards, creating an immersive experience for occupants. Verandas meander through the landscape, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, while rooms nestled alongside guide users through varied views and experiences.

Lightweight Elegance of Brick

To minimize concrete usage and reduce CO2 emissions, brick emerges as the primary material for walls, floors, and roofs. Employing a traditional jack arch system, the architects ingeniously lighten the visual weight of brick, allowing arches to seemingly float overhead. Locally sourced bricks, costing a mere fraction, contribute to both sustainability and affordability.

Climate-Responsive Design

Insulation plays a pivotal role in combating tropical heat, with lightweight filling material topping the jack arches to reduce thermal heat gain. Shaded glass surfaces and cavity walls further enhance thermal comfort, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling. During favorable weather conditions, natural ventilation takes precedence, offering a sustainable alternative to air conditioning.

Environmental Impact

The strategic use of bricks not only insulates the building but also significantly reduces concrete usage, thereby curbing CO2 emissions. Compared to cement, brick can slash CO2 emissions by up to 70%, resulting in a substantial environmental benefit. With an overall reduction of around 50 tons of CO2, the Metallic Bellows factory office sets a precedent for eco-conscious industrial architecture.

Through meticulous design and a thoughtful selection of materials, KSM Architecture demonstrates how sustainability and functionality can coexist harmoniously in the built environment. The Metallic Bellows factory office stands as a testament to the transformative power of design in shaping a more sustainable future.
