Revitalizing Communities: Parque Esmeralda in Copiapó

Saanvi Sharma

Situated in the foothills of Copiapó, Chile, Parque Esmeralda stands as a testament to community-driven transformation. Designed by CAW Arquitectos, this park has become a vital gathering space in an area previously marred by neglect and environmental degradation. Here’s an overview of this inspiring project:

A Community’s Vision

Parque Esmeralda emerged from the collective aspiration of the Esmeralda population, comprising over 300 vulnerable families, to reclaim a neglected landfill and create a communal oasis. For decades, the site remained desolate, filled with garbage and debris, until residents mobilized to revitalize the space into a vibrant hub for social interaction and recreation.

Greening the Desert

The park’s design concept revolves around the idea of an “urban garden” in the desert, aiming to introduce greenery into the arid landscape of the Atacama Region. Despite facing challenges such as water scarcity and extreme poverty, the architects envisioned a strategy focused on maximizing green visual perspectives while minimizing the actual green area. By strategically placing groves and community gardens along pathways and intersections, the park offers residents lush visual experiences and fosters a sense of connection with nature.

Bridging Divides

Parque Esmeralda serves as a bridge between two neighborhoods that were historically divided by the landfill. Through accessible pathways, small meeting spaces, and communal gardens, the park facilitates social interaction and strengthens community bonds. Its design incorporates zones of varying vegetation cover, orchards, and paved areas, creating a harmonious blend of social and ecological elements.

Sustainable Terraced Design

Given the steep slope of the terrain, the park is organized into terraces supported by locally sourced rocks, offering panoramic views of the Copiapo Valley. This terraced layout not only maximizes space utilization but also minimizes the formation of heat islands, ensuring a comfortable environment for visitors.

Community Engagement and Construction

The development of Parque Esmeralda involved extensive collaboration with the local community, including workshops during the design phase and active participation in the construction of green areas and stone walls. This participatory approach not only empowered residents but also instilled a sense of ownership and pride in the park.

In essence, Parque Esmeralda stands as a testament to the transformative power of community-led initiatives, demonstrating how thoughtful design and collective action can revitalize urban spaces and enhance quality of life for residents.
