Yi Sun In Pangandaran, Indonesia, SHAU Indonesia has spearheaded the transformation of a neglected area into a vibrant public space known as Paamprokan Square. Led by architects Daliana Suryawinata and Florian Heinzelmann, this project exemplifies a collaborative effort between the government and private developers to enhance community spaces. A Hub for Community Gathering
Paamprokan Square is a key component of Governor Ridwan Kamil’s initiative to prioritize public spaces in West Java. The name “Paamprokan,” derived from the Sundanese language, translates to “to gather,” reflecting its role as a communal gathering place. Situated on 1.8 hectares of land, the square accommodates a diverse range of activities, from cultural events like the annual kite festival to recreational amenities such as an outdoor gym and playground.
Maximizing Space with Minimal Budget
Despite budget constraints, SHAU Indonesia faced the challenge of designing a multi-functional space that could accommodate various programs. The design strategy focused on integrating pocket spaces within the existing greenery, preserving much of the natural landscape while incorporating essential amenities. By implementing a grid set at a 30-degree angle, the plan maximizes pedestrian access and minimizes material usage, demonstrating a thoughtful approach to sustainability.
Iconic Features and Elevated Views
One of the highlights of Paamprokan Square is its distinctive viewing tower, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Rising 11 meters above the coconut trees, the tower features three viewing platforms that provide visitors with unparalleled vistas of the sea and mountains. Modeled after diving towers, the structure includes a unique “water splash” seating sculpture, paying homage to artist David Hockney. Additionally, the expansive green surface presents opportunities for future tree planting, contributing to the area’s microclimate.
