Situated in Voss, Norway, the Elva Hotel, meaning “The River Hotel,” stands as a testament to the beauty of its surroundings. Designed by Mange Bekker Arkitektur, this small hotel offers a unique experience for active guests seeking to explore the stunning landscape of Voss, a renowned destination for outdoor and extreme sports enthusiasts.
Architectural Design
The hotel comprises 14 rooms spread across five freestanding small tower houses and a main building. The main building houses reception, conference rooms, a restaurant serving locally produced food, and four wheelchair-accessible rooms. One of the main challenges faced during the design phase was the site’s vulnerability to flooding, necessitating careful planning and construction strategies to mitigate risks.
Flood-Resistant Design
To address the risk of flooding, the buildings are raised on stilts above the projected flood levels, with the restaurant area designed to withstand flooding through water-resistant materials and elevated technical installations. This not only ensures the safety of the hotel but also creates covered outdoor spaces for guests to enjoy while offering unobstructed views of the waterfront.
Sustainable Construction
In line with sustainable principles, concrete usage is minimized to foundations and areas below the flood level, with the rest of the construction employing precut timber to reduce waste and construction time. The buildings are seamlessly integrated into the landscape, offering private views of the surrounding nature and mountains from each room.
Integration with Nature
The hotel’s design prioritizes harmony with nature, with natural-colored materials chosen to blend seamlessly with the landscape. Outdoor areas are planted with local species of meadow grass and flowers, creating a welcoming environment for local insect and birdlife.
