In the heart of Dnipro, Ukraine, FILIMONOV & KASHIRINA architects have transformed a neglected area into a vibrant public space known as Yujnui Boulevard. Led by architect Sergey Filimonov, this project aims to celebrate the history of the site while enhancing its functionality as a pedestrian boulevard. Here’s an overview of this innovative endeavor:
Embracing the Local Heritage
Yujnui Boulevard, situated in the city center, serves as a continuation of the existing pedestrian boulevard. The design concept revolves around storytelling, highlighting the rich history of the area. One of the key features is the incorporation of a symbolic stream, representing the underground river Zhabokryach that once flowed beneath the street. Although the original river remains buried due to extensive underground engineering, the boulevard pays homage to its legacy through the creation of an artificial stream, crafted from solid blocks of local granite.
Integration of Art and Landscape
A distinctive aspect of Yujnui Boulevard is the modular paving pattern, designed to seamlessly connect with the existing boulevard. The use of local granite from various manufacturers ensures continuity and cohesion throughout the space. At the intersection of the two boulevards stands the imposing sculpture of Atlant, a powerful titan from Greek mythology. Depicting Atlant breaking free from chains, the sculpture symbolizes liberation from physical, social, and personal constraints, serving as a visual representation of self-awakening and empowerment.
Multifunctional Design
Yujnui Boulevard is divided into two distinct zones: transit areas along the buildings and a multifunctional zone in the middle. The latter serves as a recreational space, featuring quiet rest areas and a children’s playground. By integrating greenery, seating, and play facilities, the boulevard offers opportunities for relaxation and social interaction, enriching the urban experience for residents and visitors alike.
Community Engagement and Collaboration
Throughout the design and construction process, FILIMONOV & KASHIRINA architects engaged with the local community to ensure that the project met their needs and aspirations. The result is a meticulously crafted public space that not only preserves the area’s heritage but also enhances its accessibility and usability. Yujnui Boulevard stands as a testament to the power of landscape architecture to revitalize urban environments and foster community pride and engagement.
