Existing Condition
The area of intervention in Koprivnica can be segmented into three zones: Ban Jelačić square, the square in front of the market, and the main city square Zrinski. Each space has unique potential, yet the main square, Zrinski, acts more as a transit place defined by flow rather than lingering activities.
Concept
Embracing the inevitability of flow and bicycle paths, smaller zones are formed within Zrinski square, resembling a collage of activities structured around the axes of bicycle paths. Each zone corresponds directly with the purpose of the surrounding context or introduces new amenities, creating visual borders with neighboring squares.
Project Details
Zrinski Square is divided into twelve smaller zones, each adapted to nearby buildings or micro ambiances. For instance, there are specific zones like “art zone” in front of galleries and “coffee zones” near bars and restaurants. The square is predominantly made of concrete pavers of varying dimensions and colors, carefully chosen to complement the surrounding buildings and historical heritage.
Design Elements
Different zones within the square are delineated by paving stone colors, with paths referencing old brick roads and multifunctional zones highlighted for occasional gatherings. Mosaics depicting Podravina embroidery adorn the middle, while the bicycle lane is made of rough-hewn concrete. The fountain, reminiscent of the old flower garden, serves as a multipurpose feature, reflecting the park and Town Hall.
Urban Equipment and Greenery
The urban equipment of the square is tailored to the environment, including wooden benches, benches/pedestals for art displays, and benches-bike racks. Solar trees equipped with Wi-Fi and power outlets encourage engagement, while sculptures and horticultural species are strategically placed to enhance the ambiance and biodiversity of the square.
In essence, the Zrinski Square project reimagines public spaces in Koprivnica, fostering connectivity, activity, and appreciation of local heritage while embracing modern urban design principles.
