Asaf Lerman Architects introduces the MIDBARIUM, an innovative park situated on the outskirts of Be’er Sheva, Israel, designed to promote environmental consciousness. MIDBARIUM, derived from the Hebrew word for desert (‘MIDBAR’), encompasses open spaces meticulously crafted to replicate various natural elements and showcase the region’s diverse wildlife. Led by Asaf Lerman, a team of experts collaborated on the project, infusing it with architectural brilliance and sustainable principles.
Entrance Design
The architectural centerpiece of MIDBARIUM is its entrance roof structure, inspired by local desert traditions. Crafted from raw concrete, the tent-like structure spans 1,800 square meters, serving as a welcoming shelter for visitors. Designed in collaboration with construction engineer Rafi Bat, renowned for his work on iconic brutalist structures in Be’er Sheva, including City Hall and The University Library, the entrance roof reflects a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
Sustainable Features
Unlike traditional brutalist architecture, which often emphasizes weight and mass, the entrance roof of MIDBARIUM incorporates a delicate triangulated grid of beams. This innovative design allows light and shadow to permeate the space, creating a dynamic interplay of textures and ambiance. Moreover, the roof facilitates natural ventilation, directing fresh air towards the adjacent educational building and minimizing reliance on artificial cooling systems.
