Designed by Arquitectura nativa, Casa Martha stands as a testament to the seamless integration of rudimentary and artisanal techniques, aiming to unite time, form, and context through its composition and materiality deeply rooted in ancestral origins.

Contextual Setting

Situated amidst the urban landscape of La Misión, between the municipalities of Ensenada and Rosarito in Mexico, Casa Martha occupies a terrain characterized by rugged topography. The lot spans 15 x 40 meters, nestled within an area densified with architectural typologies catering to tourism.

Architectural Concept

The architectural program envisioned Casa Martha as a retirement home for Martha and Bill, an archaeologist couple, alongside a dedicated space for the plastic arts. Embracing a philosophy of minimal intervention, the design sought to create a harmonious dialogue with the site through three volumes intricately embedded within the landscape and oriented towards the Pacific Ocean.

Spatial Organization

Divided into two levels, Casa Martha balances functionality with aesthetic appeal. The first level encompasses visitor quarters and a versatile study area, while the second level houses the heart of the home – an entertainment room, dining area, and kitchen. Large windows and salt pine porches weave an interplay of light and shadow, offering both protection from winds and a sense of privacy.

Integration with Landscape

At the rear of the social area, a staircase leads to the third level, where the main chamber boasts panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. Throughout Casa Martha, the architectural language reflects a deep sensitivity and reverence for the natural surroundings.

Materiality and Construction

The primary construction material, compacted earth, serves as a foundational element, anchoring Casa Martha firmly within its context and topography. This choice not only pays homage to the site’s raw materials but also underscores the project’s commitment to sustainable and culturally resonant architecture.

Casa Martha emerges as a timeless embodiment of architectural craftsmanship, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary living while fostering a profound connection to its cultural and environmental context.
