Visionary Design
The Mobility Hub at Eandistip in Mechelen, Belgium, represents a paradigm shift in parking infrastructure. Designed by POLO architects and archipelago, this circular structure transcends traditional parking facilities by integrating car and bike parking with public amenities like rooftop terraces, offices, and a supermarket. Anticipating the rise of shared and self-driving vehicles, the hub adopts compact parking configurations to optimize space usage and accommodate diverse functions.
Adaptable Architecture
From inception, the design prioritized flexibility to accommodate evolving community needs and urban development. The open floorplans, supported by loadbearing concrete X-elements, allow seamless reconfiguration of interior spaces. Utilizing a box-in-box principle for insulated functions facilitates diverse program layouts while maximizing spatial efficiency. The strategic placement of circulation cores ensures accessibility and minimizes obstruction, while integrated split-level landings pave the way for future automated parking systems.
Facilitating Modal Shift
In response to the evolving urban landscape, the Mobility Hub champions a modal shift in mobility. Positioned on the outskirts of Mechelen’s historic center, it serves as a pivotal point for transitioning commuters from cars to public and sustainable transportation modes. The design’s adaptability caters to varied parking needs, from accommodating bicycles to potentially housing shared and self-driving cars, thereby freeing up space for alternative uses within the building.
Fostering Urban Connectivity
Beyond parking provision, the Mobility Hub fosters urban connectivity and community engagement. Its urban terraces offer panoramic views of Mechelen, serving as versatile spaces for office workers and public events. The ground floor’s Welkomstplein (Welcome Square) seamlessly integrates the hub with the surrounding residential neighborhood, facilitating smooth pedestrian flows and enhancing the area’s vitality.
Conclusion: A Nexus of Innovation
The Mobility Hub exemplifies a holistic approach to parking infrastructure, blending functionality, adaptability, and urban integration. As Mechelen’s urban fabric continues to evolve, this visionary project stands as a beacon of innovation, embodying the transformative potential of architectural design in shaping vibrant and sustainable urban environments.
