Situated in the heart of Berlin’s Friedrichshain neighborhood, Locke at East Side Gallery, designed by Grzywinski+Pons, is a testament to the city’s rich history and vibrant cultural landscape. With its 176 rooms, cafe, bar, lounge, co-working, and event spaces, the hotel stands as a modern tribute to the iconic East Side Gallery, the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall.

Embracing Historical Transformation

The design concept for Locke at East Side Gallery draws inspiration from the transformative narrative of the Berlin Wall itself. Once a symbol of division and repression, the East Side Gallery now embodies freedom of expression and cultural exchange through its vibrant murals. Grzywinski+Pons sought to emulate this spirit of transformation by creating a hotel that serves as a crossroads for ideas, experiences, and artistic expression.

A Microcosm of Berlin

The hotel’s ground floor, housing the majority of its public spaces, serves as a microcosm of Berlin’s diverse neighborhoods. By maintaining a visual and physical connection between Muhlenstrasse and the River Spree, Grzywinski+Pons aimed to blur the boundaries between public and private domains. The use of non-continuous walls and open layouts further enhances the sense of unity and inclusivity within the space, echoing the ethos of the East Side Gallery itself.

Materiality and Hierarchy

The design ethos of Locke at East Side Gallery is reflected in its material palette, which balances industrial elements with softer, warmer textures. From exposed concrete walls to locally-sourced timber and plush upholstery, each material choice contributes to the hotel’s layered aesthetic. The juxtaposition of raw and refined finishes creates a harmonious blend of old and new, echoing the cultural tapestry of Berlin.

Guest Room Experience

In the guest rooms, Grzywinski+Pons continued their exploration of liminality, creating tranquil spaces that offer privacy without sacrificing connectivity. The integration of sliding panels and textured glass partitions allows for seamless transitions between different functional areas, while the use of natural materials and subdued tones fosters a sense of serenity and refuge for guests.

Exalting Exchange and Coexistence

Locke at East Side Gallery is more than just a hotel; it’s a celebration of Berlin’s resilience, creativity, and spirit of unity. By embracing the city’s complex history and cultural heritage, Grzywinski+Pons have crafted a space where guests and locals alike can come together, exchange ideas, and create lasting memories. In this liminal oasis, the magic of Berlin truly comes to life.
