Introduction

Nestled in the serene landscape of Nagarkot, Nepal, the Cloud Catcher Hospitality Building, designed by MAP Design, serves as the ‘Meet and Greet’ center of the Kavya Resort. Positioned at the highest point of the resort, the building offers a unique vantage point to witness the ever-changing drama of passing clouds, creating magical moments for visitors.

Spatial Organization

Drawing inspiration from local village architecture built on steep terrains, the building minimizes its footprint and adopts a vertical organization with two rock-like volumes. A central circulation spine connects these volumes, allowing nature to punctuate the spaces and provide breathtaking views of the Himalayas and the valley below. The main level features welcoming areas and a cloud café, while the lower levels house dining rooms above the main kitchen, with cascading steps leading to alfresco areas and the pool terrace.

Spatial Experience

Inspired by local geology, the architecture offers diverse spatial experiences, from crevasse-like circulation hallways to cave-like gathering rooms and promontory-like verandas overlooking the mountain range. These design elements immerse visitors in the natural beauty of the surroundings, enhancing their overall experience.

Form

Responding to the local climate, seismic forces, and panoramic views, the Cloud Catcher Hospitality Building exhibits a dynamic form that varies from every angle. Reinforced concrete shear walls dominate the side facades, allowing sunlight through dormer punctures. The entry facade resembles a cluster of village houses, while the back facade transforms into a telescopic form, extending towards the valley with open and transparent facades that maximize views.

In essence, the Cloud Catcher Hospitality Building is not just a structure but a harmonious integration of architecture and nature, offering guests an unforgettable experience amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Nepal’s Nagarkot region.
