Situated along the scenic Qiantang River in Hangzhou’s Binjiang District, the Fengyuan Station emerges as a vibrant hub for children’s recreation, seamlessly integrated into the city’s ambitious waterfront revitalization project. Spearheaded by the Original Design Studio of TJAD, this innovative endeavor redefines traditional notions of public space through thoughtful design and meticulous planning.

A Playground for All Ages

In response to the need for revitalized public amenities and improved connectivity between urban and riverside areas, the Fengyuan Station offers a multifaceted solution. Serving as a dynamic children’s paradise within a lush forest setting, the station transcends conventional playground design to provide a holistic recreational experience for visitors of all ages.

Architectural Concept

Drawing inspiration from the art of origami and the graceful flight of kites, the station’s design features five distinct C-shaped units arranged to maximize spatial diversity and functionality. Three units overlook the picturesque Qiantang River, housing the Binjiang Bookstore, while the remaining two units cater to inland activities, hosting an indoor coffee shop and an outdoor playground. The station’s distinctive folded eaves offer shelter and reprieve, creating inviting spaces for relaxation and social interaction.

Material Innovation

Innovative use of materials further enhances the station’s architectural appeal and environmental sustainability. Imitation wood aluminum panels line the interior of each unit, while dark gray titanium zinc plates adorn the exterior, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings. Colored concrete flooring delineates spatial boundaries, accentuating the station’s modular design and promoting intuitive navigation.

Structural Ingenuity

To achieve a lightweight aesthetic without compromising structural integrity, the station employs a novel construction method characterized by dense columns and a gravity-resistant lateral force system. Spherical joint nodes and shuttle columns facilitate spatial articulation while ensuring optimal stability and safety. By integrating structural elements with facade design, the station achieves a harmonious balance between form and function, embodying the principles of integrated architectural innovation.

Conclusion

The Fengyuan Station exemplifies the transformative potential of innovative design in reimagining public spaces for the modern era. Through a harmonious blend of architectural creativity, environmental consciousness, and community engagement, this visionary project not only enriches the urban fabric of Hangzhou but also inspires a new generation of sustainable urban development practices. As a testament to the collaborative efforts of architects, engineers, and urban planners, the Fengyuan Station stands as a beacon of progress and possibility in the realm of landscape architecture and public infrastructure.
