According to the study, replacing 50% of animal products like pork, chicken, beef, and milk with plant-based alternatives could yield profound benefits. Not only would this dietary shift reduce global emissions from agriculture by 31%, but it could also safeguard forests and enhance nutrition for millions worldwide.

Conducted by researchers from the University of Vermont (UVM), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, the study employed a global economic land use model to evaluate the holistic impacts of transitioning to plant-based alternatives. The findings underscored the synergistic benefits of substituting multiple animal products, with beef replacement yielding the most substantial impacts.

Reforestation and Climate Benefits

The study suggests that beyond emissions reduction, transitioning to plant-based alternatives could facilitate reforestation efforts on land no longer needed for livestock production. By reforesting these areas, the climate benefits could be more than doubled, while future declines in ecosystem integrity could be halved by 2050. This reforested land could also contribute significantly to global land restoration needs, aligning with biodiversity conservation goals under the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Eva Wollenberg, a study co-author from UVM, emphasizes the importance of plant-based alternatives in achieving food security, climate goals, and biodiversity conservation. She notes that such dietary shifts are not merely a culinary trend but a crucial opportunity to address global challenges comprehensively.

Implications for Food Systems

The study outlines a range of positive outcomes resulting from the proposed dietary shift, including a decline in global agricultural area expansion, halted deforestation, reduced nitrogen inputs to cropland, and decreased water usage. Additionally, undernourishment rates could decrease globally, benefiting millions of individuals.

Lead author Marta Kozicka from IIASA highlights the potential for dietary changes to yield significant improvements in biodiversity conservation. The study’s scenarios, based on nutritionally comparable plant-based recipes, reflect feasible dietary shifts that align with existing food manufacturing capabilities.

The study underscores the importance of encouraging low-animal source food diets to meet climate mitigation targets, promote global health and food security, and ensure responsible natural resource utilization.
