Located in Zhengzhou, China, the Le Meridien Hotel stands as a beacon of elegance and sophistication in the heart of the city. The hotel’s landscape underwent a transformative renovation in 2019, led by Shma Company Limited, to create a stunning public space that enhances the hotel’s overall ambiance and addresses practical concerns such as parking and vehicular movement.
Project Overview
The project involved redesigning approximately 6,000 square meters of landscape area in front of the existing five-star hotel, originally completed in 2013 by Neri & Hu. The primary objective was to revitalize the hotel’s frontage landscape, elevating its aesthetic appeal while also addressing logistical challenges related to parking and traffic flow. The goal was to craft a landscape that would not only serve functional purposes but also become a captivating landmark in the neighborhood.
Weaving Tradition with Innovation
Drawing inspiration from Zhengzhou’s rich history in the weaving textile industry, the design team conceptualized a landscape that pays homage to this heritage. Sculptural-like landscape elements, resembling woven fabric, were created to infuse the space with artistic flair and cultural significance. Undulating lawn stripes mimic the motion of silk being woven, while water feature stripes adorned with sculptures serve as welcoming focal points at the lobby drop-off area.
Harmonizing Public and Private Spaces
A key challenge was to harmonize the public-facing nature of the landscape with the private character of the hotel. To achieve this balance, the design incorporated stainless steel planters finished in two distinct colors. A brilliant bronze finish projects vibrancy and energy when viewed from the public roadside, while a black mirror finish offers a sense of tranquility and relaxation when observed from the hotel side. Careful attention was also given to integrating the landscape with the infrastructure of a new underground metro station beneath the site, ensuring seamless coordination of design elements.
Creating a Community Hub
Upon completion, the transformed landscape has become a focal point for both hotel guests and the local community. The wavy lawn stripes, reflective water features, and mirrored planter finishes collectively illuminate the hotel district, drawing visitors to engage in various activities, from casual meet-ups to social media-worthy photoshoots.
